Grasslands 18-Box Back-to-Back CBU Cover

Mitchell Metals fabricated and installed a 9' 6" x 32' 2" back-to-back CBU cover in Bronze at Grasslands, a Lennar community in Foley, Alabama — eighteen cluster box units under one roof, on 6x8 extruded aluminum posts specified for Gulf Coast wind speeds.

In short

Mitchell Metals fabricated and installed a 9′ 6″ x 32′ 2″ back-to-back CBU mail kiosk cover at Grasslands in Foley, Alabama, for the Lennar Gulf Coast Division. The structure is Bronze on 6×8 extruded aluminum posts, upsized from 6×6 for coastal wind loads, with an 18-box capacity.

Overview

Eighteen boxes, one roof, half the footprint

Grasslands is a Lennar community on Sunshine Way in Foley, Alabama, in Baldwin County about ten miles from the Gulf. It is the largest of the three Lennar Gulf Coast mail centers Mitchell Metals delivered in this period.

What back-to-back buys you

A back-to-back configuration puts two rows of cluster box units spine to spine down the centre of the structure, with a single roof over both and a central line of posts carrying it. Eighteen boxes in a single-sided run would have needed something close to sixty feet. Back to back, it is thirty-two — roughly half the length, half the concrete, and half the frontage taken out of the streetscape.

The trade is depth. At 9′ 6″ the structure is deeper than a standard or cantilever cover, because it has to shelter two rows of boxes and leave a working aisle in front of each. On a site with room that is a straightforward exchange; on a tight infill lot it would not be.

Why the posts are 6×8

Baldwin County sits on the Alabama coast, and the design wind speed there is in a different band from inland Georgia. The response was not a different canopy — it was the same pre-engineered system with the posts stepped up from 6×6 to 6×8. That is the advantage of engineering a product line rather than a one-off: the structure that answers a higher wind load is the structure you already build, in a heavier section.

Mitchell Metals supplied the cover only at Grasslands. The frame is extruded aluminum, so nothing rusts — which matters within ten miles of the Gulf. It is engineered to ASCE 7-16 wind and snow loads and designed to meet ADA and IBC requirements, with cluster box placement following the USPS Builders/Developers Guide.

Why these specs were chosen

Back-to-back configuration. Two rows of boxes spine to spine under one roof. Eighteen boxes in thirty-two feet instead of sixty.

9′ 6″ depth. Enough to shelter both rows and leave a working aisle in front of each.

6×8 posts, not 6×6. Baldwin County’s design wind speed is in a higher band than inland Georgia. Same system, heavier section.

Bronze on extruded aluminum. Factory finish on a frame that does not rust, ten miles from the Gulf.

A back-to-back cover shelters two rows of cluster box units set spine to spine down the centre of the structure, under a single roof carried on a central line of posts. It is the configuration to choose when the box count is high and the frontage is limited: eighteen boxes fit in roughly thirty-two feet back to back, against close to sixty feet in a single-sided run.

Capacity is counted in cluster box units rather than individual compartments. Eighteen cluster box units typically serve a community in the range of two hundred homes, depending on the unit type specified and the parcel locker provision the USPS requires for the development.
