Greenfields Cantilever CBU & Mail Kiosk Cover

Mitchell Metals fabricated and installed an 8′ x 21′ 2″ cantilever CBU mail kiosk cover at Greenfields in Fairhope, Alabama, for the Lennar Gulf Coast Division. The structure is Bronze on 6×8 extruded aluminum posts, upsized from 6×6 for coastal wind loads, with a 6-box capacity.
The first of three on the Alabama Gulf Coast
Greenfields is a Lennar community on County Road 32 in Fairhope, Alabama, in Baldwin County on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay. It is one of three Lennar Gulf Coast communities Mitchell Metals delivered in the same period, with Grasslands and Glenlakes twenty miles south in Foley.
Why the posts are 6×8
Baldwin County sits on the Alabama coast, and the design wind speed there is in a different band from inland Georgia. The response was not a different canopy — it was the same pre-engineered system with the posts stepped up from 6×6 to 6×8. That is the advantage of engineering a product line rather than a one-off: the structure that answers a higher wind load is the structure you already build, in a heavier section.
A cantilever was already the right configuration for the site — one line of posts behind the boxes, roof reaching forward, clear frontage for residents and for the carrier. Upsizing the posts does not change that geometry. It changes the section that carries it, and on a cantilever the posts are where the bending goes, so that is the member worth putting the extra material into.
At twenty-one feet it holds six cluster box units in a single run. The surrounding ground in the photographs is still raw — this went in early, which is when a mail center normally does, because it is part of the horizontal scope rather than the houses.
Mitchell Metals supplied the cover only at Greenfields; the cluster box units were already the builder’s. The frame is extruded aluminum, so nothing rusts — which is worth more within a few miles of salt water than it is inland. It is engineered to ASCE 7-16 wind and snow loads and designed to meet ADA and IBC requirements.
Who we worked with
One of the largest homebuilders in the United States, founded in 1954 and operating across more than twenty states. The Gulf Coast division builds in the Mobile and Baldwin County markets of coastal Alabama.
Our point of contact at the Lennar Gulf Coast Division, across three communities in Baldwin County delivered in the same period — Greenfields in Fairhope, and Grasslands and Glenlakes in Foley.
Headquartered in Marietta, Georgia, Mitchell Metals engineers and fabricates pre-engineered aluminum canopy systems in-house and delivers CBU mail centers, picnic pavilions, bus stop covers, and amenity covers as complete turnkey packages.
Mitchell Metals values partnerships as much as the products we provide. Our thanks to Lisa Strickland and the Lennar Gulf Coast Division team.

Why these specs were chosen
6×8 posts, not 6×6. Baldwin County’s design wind speed is in a higher band than inland Georgia. Same system, heavier section.
Cantilever configuration. One post line behind the boxes, clear frontage in front of them — and the posts are where a cantilever puts its load.
8′ x 21′ 2″. Six cluster box units in one run, at the depth cantilever geometry needs.
Extruded aluminum. Nothing on the frame rusts. Within a few miles of Mobile Bay that is not a detail.
Frequently asked questions about this project
Who built the CBU mail kiosk cover at Greenfields in Fairhope, AL?
Mitchell Metals, LLC of Marietta, Georgia manufactured and installed the 8' x 21' 2" CBU mail kiosk cover at Greenfields. The structure is Bronze on 6x8 extruded aluminum posts and beams.
Who is the builder of the Greenfields community?
Greenfields is a Lennar community in Fairhope, Baldwin County, Alabama, built by the Lennar Gulf Coast Division. One of the largest homebuilders in the United States, founded in 1954 and operating across more than twenty states. The Gulf Coast division builds in the Mobile and Baldwin County markets of coastal Alabama.
What are the specifications of the Greenfields structure?
The structure is a cantilever CBU mail kiosk cover measuring 8' x 21' 2", finished in Bronze. Posts and beams are 6x8 extruded aluminum. It is rated for ASCE 7-16 wind and snow loads and designed to meet ADA and IBC requirements.
Why do Gulf Coast projects need heavier posts?
Design wind speed varies by location, and the Alabama Gulf Coast sits in a substantially higher band than inland Georgia. The canopy system does not change — the configuration, the connections and the roof are the same — but the posts are specified in a heavier section. At Greenfields, Grasslands and Glenlakes that meant 6x8 extruded aluminum rather than the 6x6 used on comparable inland structures.
Does Mitchell Metals deliver outside Georgia?
Yes. Mitchell Metals manufactures in Marietta, Georgia and delivers and installs nationally — across the Southeast, on the Alabama Gulf Coast, in the Pacific Northwest and in California. Because the canopies are pre-engineered and fabricated in-house, what ships is a known system and site work is assembly. Call 470-870-7733 for residential projects.
Does Mitchell Metals serve builders in Fairhope and Baldwin County?
Yes. Mitchell Metals is headquartered in Marietta, Georgia and serves home builders, land developers, general contractors, and architects nationally, including Fairhope and Baldwin County, Alabama. Call 470-870-7733 for residential projects.
