Smoky Hollow CBU Mail Kiosk Cover

Mitchell Metals supplied and installed a 3-box standard CBU mail kiosk cover at Smoky Hollow in Sevierville, Tennessee, for the D.R. Horton Knoxville division. The structure measures 7′ 6″ x 12′ 2″ in Bronze on 4×6 extruded aluminum posts and beams.
A small one, done the same way
Smoky Hollow is a D.R. Horton townhome community on Bob Hollow Road in Sevierville, Tennessee, in the foothills of the Smokies. It is a small community and it got a small mail center: three cluster box units under a 7′ 6″ x 12′ 2″ standard cover.
Mitchell Metals has worked with D.R. Horton across several divisions over a number of years — Greensboro, NE Tennessee, and here in Knoxville. The relationship is the reason a job this size runs smoothly: the specification is known, the submittal is a formality, and nobody has to work out how any of it goes together.
Small does not mean different
A three-box mail center uses the same extruded aluminum, the same Bronze finish, the same pre-engineered connections and the same roof detail as a twenty-two-box one. What changes is the span and the post size — 4×6 here, because a twelve-foot roof does not need 6×6 and would look wrong wearing it.
That is the practical meaning of a pre-engineered system. It scales down as cleanly as it scales up, and a small community does not get a lesser structure — it gets a correctly sized one.
The frame is extruded aluminum, so nothing rusts. It is engineered to ASCE 7-16 wind and snow loads and designed to meet ADA and IBC requirements, with cluster box placement following the USPS Builders/Developers Guide.

Why these specs were chosen
Standard configuration. One bank of boxes under a single-slope roof — correct when the door count does not call for two banks.
7′ 6″ x 12′ 2″. Sized to a small townhome community. Full depth so people are actually covered, short enough not to over-build the pad.
4×6 posts and beams. A twelve-foot span does not need 6×6, and would look wrong wearing it. Correct beats bigger.
Same system, smaller. Identical aluminum, finish, connections and roof detail as the largest covers in the portfolio.

Who is the builder of the Smoky Hollow community?
Smoky Hollow is a D.R. Horton community in Sevierville, Sevier County, Tennessee, built by the D.R. Horton Knoxville. The largest homebuilder in the United States by volume, founded in 1978 and having built more than one million homes.
What are the specifications of the Smoky Hollow structure?
The structure is a standard CBU mail kiosk cover measuring 7′ 6″ x 12′ 2″, finished in Bronze. Posts and beams are 4×6 extruded aluminum. It is rated for ASCE 7-16 wind and snow loads and designed to meet ADA and IBC requirements.
Is there a minimum size for a CBU mail kiosk cover?
No practical minimum. Smoky Hollow is a 3-box standard cover at 7′ 6″ x 12′ 2″ — the same extruded aluminum system, finish and roof detail as the largest installations, with the span and post size scaled to the structure. Small communities get a correctly sized cover rather than a lesser one.
