In short

Mitchell Metals fabricated and installed a 16′ x 28′ gable pavilion at Crescent Point in Carrollton, Georgia, for Tamarack Land. The structure is Bronze on 6×6 extruded aluminum posts and beams, and was built to serve as a community gathering space while sheltering the community’s existing cluster mailboxes.

Overview

A pavilion that happens to hold the mail

Crescent Point is a single-family community on Carl Jordan Place in Carrollton, Georgia, in Carroll County west of Atlanta. The cluster mailboxes were already in and already in use. What the community did not have was anywhere to stand.

One structure, two jobs

The brief was a gathering pavilion. The constraint was that it had to go where the mail already was. Those two facts could have produced an awkward compromise — a pavilion with mailboxes shoved into one end — and instead produced the most useful structure in this part of the portfolio.

Sixteen by twenty-eight feet is pavilion scale, not mail-kiosk scale. A 12′ x 12′ gable holds six boxes and nothing else; this one holds the boxes along one side and leaves the rest of the floor clear. People collecting mail are not in anybody’s way, and the structure reads as a place rather than as equipment.

Why that matters for a mail area

The mail center is the one piece of shared infrastructure every resident uses several times a week. It is where neighbours actually meet, and in most communities it is a slab, a bank of metal boxes and nowhere to stand. Putting a roof with a ridge and sixteen feet of width over it is a small change in specification and a large change in what the space is for.

The frame is extruded aluminum, so nothing rusts. It is engineered to ASCE 7-16 wind and snow loads and designed to meet ADA and IBC requirements, with the existing cluster box arrangement retained.

Why these specs were chosen

16′ x 28′. Pavilion scale. Wide enough that collecting mail and standing around are not the same square foot.

Gable configuration. A ridge and two gable ends — the structure reads as a building, which is what a gathering space has to do.

6×6 posts and beams. Correct for a twenty-eight-foot span at sixteen feet of width, and proportionate to a structure people stand under.

Built over existing boxes. The cluster mailboxes were already in service. The pavilion was dimensioned to them rather than the other way round.

Questions

Frequently asked questions about this project

Mitchell Metals, LLC of Marietta, Georgia manufactured and installed the 16' x 28' picnic pavilion at Crescent Point. The structure is Bronze on 6x6 extruded aluminum posts and beams.

Crescent Point is a Tamarack Land community in Carrollton, Carroll County, Georgia, built by the Tamarack Land — Atlanta. A Georgia land developer working west of Atlanta, and the developer of Crescent Point in Carrollton.

The structure is a gable picnic pavilion measuring 16' x 28', finished in Bronze. Posts and beams are 6x6 extruded aluminum. It is rated for ASCE 7-16 wind and snow loads and designed to meet ADA and IBC requirements.

It can, and Crescent Point is the case for doing it. A 16' x 28' gable pavilion holds a bank of cluster boxes along one side and still leaves the floor clear, so the structure works as a gathering space rather than only as a roof over the mail. It costs more than a dedicated mail canopy and does considerably more for the community.

Yes. At Crescent Point the cluster mailboxes were already in service and the pavilion was dimensioned around them. Because the structures are pre-engineered and fabricated in-house, the fit is resolved in the shop against measurements taken on site rather than improvised during installation.
