In short

Mitchell Metals supplied and installed a 17-box cantilever CBU cover at Wildflower in Chattanooga, Tennessee, for Empire Homes. The structure measures 8′ x 52′ 2″ in Bronze on 6×6 extruded aluminum posts and beams, and is the longest continuous mail center run Mitchell Metals has built.

Overview

Fifty-two feet in one unbroken line

Wildflower is an Empire Homes community in East Brainerd, Chattanooga, built around twelve acres of green space with a clubhouse, resort-style pool and pickleball courts. The mail center sits on the island opposite the clubhouse, where everyone entering the amenity area walks past it.

At 52 feet 2 inches it is the longest single mail center run Mitchell Metals has built. Seventeen cluster box units in one continuous line, carried on a single row of 6×6 posts set behind the boxes.

Why a run this long has to be cantilever

Seventeen boxes is a lot of frontage. Put posts on both sides of it and residents are weaving around structure for fifty feet, and a carrier servicing the units has to work around a post every few boxes. The cantilever puts every post on the back side, so the entire approach face is clear from one end to the other.

It also lets the structure sit tight against the curb line. A run this long needs to follow the geometry of the island it sits on, and a canopy with posts on both sides simply would not have fit the footprint.

Photographed like architecture, because it is

Empire Homes had the finished canopy photographed properly — composed, landscaped, shot in good light against the clubhouse. It is a rare thing in this trade. Most mail centers are documented with a phone on the way back to the truck, and the difference in how the structure reads is immediate.

The frame is extruded aluminum, so nothing on it rusts. It is engineered to ASCE 7-16 wind and snow loads and designed to meet ADA and IBC requirements, with cluster box placement following the USPS Builders/Developers Guide.

Why these specs were chosen

Cantilever configuration. Every post behind the boxes. At seventeen units the clear approach is not a nicety — it is the difference between a usable mail center and an obstacle course.

8′ x 52′ 2″. The longest run in the portfolio, sized to seventeen cluster box units in one unbroken line and to the curve of the island it sits on.

6×6 posts and beams. A fifty-two-foot roof needs structural depth and visual weight. A lighter section would carry the load and look undersized.

Bronze finish. Factory-applied on extruded aluminum — holds colour, hides pollen and road dust, and reads as trim against the clubhouse rather than as a separate object.

Mitchell Metals, LLC of Marietta, Georgia manufactured and installed the 8′ x 52′ 2″ CBU mail kiosk cover at Wildflower. The structure is Bronze on 6×6 extruded aluminum posts and beams.

Mitchell Metals’ pre-engineered system scales well past a typical mail center. Wildflower is 8′ x 52′ 2″ covering seventeen cluster box units in one continuous line. Longer runs are generally built as cantilevers so the approach face stays clear for the whole length.

A cantilever carries the roof on a single line of posts set behind the cluster boxes, leaving the entire approach side free of structure. On long runs that matters a great deal: residents and carriers move along the full face without working around posts, and the canopy can sit tight against a curb or follow the edge of an island.
