Garden Lakes Two Gable CBU & Mail Kiosk Covers

Mitchell Metals supplied and installed two gable CBU mail kiosk covers at Garden Lakes in Hampton, Georgia, a D.R. Horton community. The covers measure 12′ x 48′ and 12′ x 36′, both Bronze on 6×6 extruded aluminum posts and beams, delivered turnkey with 26 cluster box units in total.
Two mail centers, because one community is really two
Garden Lakes sits at Highway 81 and North Steele Drive in Hampton, Georgia, in Henry County south of Atlanta. It is a D.R. Horton community, and it holds both single-family homes and townhomes.
Why two covers and not one long one
A single-family street and a townhome block generate mail in different densities and at different walking distances. Putting every box in one run would have meant a structure approaching eighty feet and a walk of several hundred yards for half the community. Two covers — one at 12′ x 48′ and one at 12′ x 36′ — put each group of residents inside a reasonable distance of their own boxes.
Twenty-six cluster box units across the two structures, supplied and installed by Mitchell Metals along with the covers. Turnkey matters more at this size than it does on a six-box kiosk: the boxes, the pads, the covers and the USPS approval are one scope with one party responsible for it, rather than three trades coordinating around a delivery date.
Gable at forty-eight feet
A gable roof is easy to justify on a small square kiosk — it reads as architecture. Holding that line across a forty-eight foot run is a harder call, because a long gable needs its proportions watched or it starts to look like a barn. At twelve feet deep with the ridge running the length of the structure and 6×6 posts at regular bays, it stays in proportion, and it matches the pitched roofs of the homes it serves.
Both structures are extruded aluminum, so nothing on them rusts. They are engineered to ASCE 7-16 wind and snow loads and designed to meet ADA and IBC requirements, with cluster box placement following the USPS Builders/Developers Guide.

Why these specs were chosen
Two structures, not one. Single-family and townhome residents walk to mail from different places. Two covers keep both walks short.
Gable configuration. A pitched roof with a ridge and gable ends, matched to the pitched roofs of the homes — architecture rather than an awning.
12′ x 48′ and 12′ x 36′. Sized to the box count each side of the community actually needs, rather than to a standard length.
6×6 posts and beams. The right section for spans at this length. 4×6 would have looked slender under a forty-eight foot roof.
A second gable cover serving the other side of the community
Second Gable CBU Cover
The shorter of the two mail centers, serving the opposite side of the community on the same detail and the same finish.

Frequently asked questions about this project
Who built the CBU mail kiosk cover at Garden Lakes in Hampton, GA?
Mitchell Metals, LLC of Marietta, Georgia manufactured and installed the 12′ x 48′ CBU mail kiosk cover at Garden Lakes. The structure is Bronze on 6×6 extruded aluminum posts and beams.
Who is the builder of the Garden Lakes community?
Garden Lakes is a D.R. Horton community in Hampton, Henry County, Georgia, built by the D.R. Horton Atlanta. The largest homebuilder in the United States by volume, founded in 1978 and having built more than one million homes.
What are the specifications of the Garden Lakes structure?
The structure is a gable CBU mail kiosk cover measuring 12′ x 48′, finished in Bronze. Posts and beams are 6×6 extruded aluminum. It is rated for ASCE 7-16 wind and snow loads and designed to meet ADA and IBC requirements.
Why does one community need two mail kiosk covers?
Because the walk matters. A community that holds both single-family homes and townhomes spreads its residents over more ground than a single mail run can serve comfortably. Garden Lakes has a 12′ x 48′ cover and a 12′ x 36′ cover rather than one structure of eighty feet, which keeps every resident within a short walk of their own boxes and keeps each structure in proportion to the part of the community it serves.
What does turnkey mean on a mail kiosk project?
It means Mitchell Metals supplies and installs the cluster box units as well as the cover, so the mail center arrives as one scope from one party. At Garden Lakes that covered twenty-six cluster box units across two structures. The alternative — boxes from one supplier, cover from another, pads from the site contractor — is three schedules that have to meet on the same day.
