In short

Mitchell Metals supplied and installed an 8′ x 26′ 2″ cantilever CBU mail kiosk cover at Ashwood Springs in Atlanta, Georgia, for Forestar. The structure is Bronze on 6×6 extruded aluminum posts and beams, with an 8-box capacity delivered turnkey. It is Mitchell Metals’ first project with the Forestar Georgia Central Division.

Overview

A first for the Georgia Central division

Ashwood Springs is a townhome community on Fairburn Road in the Camp Creek area of southwest Atlanta, in Fulton County. The homes are D.R. Horton’s. The land development is Forestar’s — D.R. Horton’s majority-owned lot developer — and this is the first Mitchell Metals installation for Forestar’s Georgia Central Division.

Mitchell Metals has worked with Forestar elsewhere, including the three-structure amenity package at Village Grove in Greenville, South Carolina. A first project with a new division of an existing client is a particular kind of job: the company knows the product, the division does not yet know us.

Why cantilever here

A cantilever carries the roof on one line of posts set behind the cluster boxes, with the roof reaching forward over them. Nothing stands in front of the boxes. On a townhome site where the mail center sits between the kerb and the walk, that clear frontage is the whole argument — residents approach the boxes straight on, and a delivery carrier can work the full run without walking round a post.

At twenty-six feet it holds eight cluster box units in a single uninterrupted line. The 8′ depth is deeper than a standard cover, which is what the cantilever geometry requires to get the roof far enough forward to be worth having.

Supplied turnkey — cover and cluster box units together. The frame is extruded aluminum, so nothing rusts. It is engineered to ASCE 7-16 wind and snow loads and designed to meet ADA and IBC requirements, with cluster box placement following the USPS Builders/Developers Guide.

Why these specs were chosen

Cantilever configuration. One line of posts behind the boxes, roof reaching forward. Nothing stands between a resident and their mailbox.

8′ x 26′ 2″. Eight cluster box units in one uninterrupted run, with the depth the cantilever geometry needs.

6×6 posts and beams. A cantilevered roof puts more bending into its posts than a post-and-beam span does. 6×6 is the section that answers it.

Turnkey supply. Cover and boxes from one party — one schedule, one point of responsibility.

A cantilever cover carries its roof on a single line of posts set behind the cluster box units, so the roof reaches forward over the boxes with nothing standing in front of them. It is the right choice where frontage matters — a mail center between the kerb and the walk, a tight townhome site, or anywhere a carrier needs to work the full run without walking round a post. Where the structure is meant to be looked at, a gable usually suits better.
